About The Song
In the summer of 1973 Lefty Frizzell signed with ABC Records and began recording what would become one of the strongest albums of his later career. During sessions at Woodland Sound Studio in Nashville he cut “If She Just Helps Me Get Over You,” a ballad written by Don Williams and Allen Reynolds. Produced by Don Gant, the track appeared on the album *The Legendary Lefty Frizzell*, released on September 18, 1973. It later surfaced as the B-side to the single “Lucky Arms” (ABC 12023) in September 1974, marking another quiet entry in Frizzell’s final productive period before his death in 1975 at age forty-seven.
Williams and Reynolds had crafted a realistic, understated portrait of romantic recovery. The narrator finds himself with a new woman and quietly hopes she can help him move past the pain of a previous relationship. There are no grand declarations or dramatic vows, only a gentle acknowledgment that healing sometimes arrives through ordinary affection and time. The song captured the kind of honest, mature perspective that defined much of Frizzell’s ABC-era work, reflecting the hard-won wisdom of a man who had already lived through fame, heartbreak, and years on the road.
Frizzell delivered the performance with the same smooth, slightly slurred phrasing and gentle vocal slides that had become his signature since the early 1950s. By 1973 his voice had deepened with experience, yet it retained the conversational warmth that made every line feel intimate. The understated arrangement featured soft steel guitar and piano, allowing the focus to remain on Lefty’s relaxed delivery and the song’s reflective mood rather than pushing for commercial flash.
Although “If She Just Helps Me Get Over You” was not issued as an A-side and did not climb the Billboard charts like some of his earlier smashes, it earned immediate respect among musicians and longtime fans. Many consider Lefty’s version the definitive recording, even though Charley Pride and Sonny James had cut the song earlier in 1973. The track fit perfectly alongside other highlights from the same sessions, including “That’s the Way Love Goes” and “I Never Go Around Mirrors,” capturing Frizzell in mature, confident voice during his late-career renaissance with ABC.
The song later appeared on reissues and compilations drawn from his ABC catalog, including the 1982 double album *The Legendary Lefty Frizzell – His Last Sessions*. Its inclusion alongside other strong late-period cuts helped preserve the album as one of the most admired chapters in Frizzell’s discography, showing that his storytelling gifts had only grown sharper with age.
More than fifty years after its release, “If She Just Helps Me Get Over You” stands as a quiet highlight from Lefty Frizzell’s final recordings. What began as another thoughtful ballad from two gifted songwriters became a lasting example of his ability to turn simple, honest emotion into art. The track reminds listeners that even as chart success slowed and health issues mounted, his relaxed, expressive style continued to connect with audiences who valued sincerity over spectacle.

Lyric
It may not make me tremble the soft touch of her hand
But she won’t break my heart the way you do
So I’m gonna try to give her the best love that I canIf she just helps me get over you
If she just picks me up when I get down
If she’s there when the mem’ries walk around
Maybe someday I’ll love her as much as I’ve loved youI don’t suppose that loving will ever be the same
But she wants me the way I wanted you
So I’m gonna try to give her the best love that I canIf she just helps me get over you
If she just picks me up
If she just helps me get over you
